Carcasses are the dead bodies of creatures. Besides the Koalefant Carcass, all of them appear after killing a certain mob under certain conditions. They can be burned to avoid their respective spawn.
Common Mutation condition
Some carcasses can be mutated and turn to the other mob. After death, their body has a 50% chance to leave their remains behind. After a couple of seconds, it will start shaking and burst out into their Mutated form; if certain additional conditions were followed: was killed on a specific land like:
- In Lunar Island
- In Lunar Grotto
- In Lunar Rift Floor
- In Moonstorm
- Under Lunar Hail
- Under Enlightenment Full Moon.
Hounds killed by a Possessed Varg's frost breath will be guaranteed to leave behind corpses, and soon mutate into Horror Hounds.
Wurt with the Lunar Mutated Merm skill can feed loyal Merms or Merm Guards a Moon Shard/Infused Moon Shard to convert them into their mutated form. With the Terra Mutation skill, Wurt can cast a spell using the Brilliant Mudslinger to do the same.
Crystal-Crested Buzzard condition
This content is available only after activating the
Lunar Rift
When Crystal-Crested Buzzards are nearby (indicated by their shadows), the corpse of the mob will stay until it is eaten by them. Some will be mutated by the birds. Mob loot will not drop unless all the mutated Buzzards are gone, unless it was eaten by them, then the amount of items will be reduced and some will be spoiled immediately.
If there is no Crystal-Crested Buzzard around, then the carcass will drop all items that should be dropped from original mob. If it was eaten by Crystal-Crested Buzzards then the drop will change:
- All drops that cab be rotted will not drop expect of one
- One of rottable items will be dropped very rotted.
- All items that have durability will drop with 10%
That works with all mobs.
Incursive Gestalt condition
This content is available only after activating the
Lunar Rift
It seems as though these strange entities that emerged from the rifts are in search of living hosts... or perhaps once living.”
When a Lunar Rift is active in the world, killing some mobs will leave their respective Carcass on the ground. After some time, an Incursive Gestalt will appear and float to the Carcass. Afterwards, it enters the Carcass and reanimates the fallen Mob.

Mobs that can't have Carcasses
All Clockworks mobs, plant mobs, stone, clay and cookie made mobs can't leave carcasses. Rock Lobsters can leave corpses though.
Koalefant Carcass
Tracking a Suspicious Dirt Pile with a Hound's Tooth on it will eventually lead to a Koalefant Carcass surrounded by a Varg and some Hounds which will progressively eat from the Carcass. The Carcass will disappear once the Varg and Hounds have been defeated or after the Varg bites its bones once it's done eating.
The Koalefant Carcass will have 2 Meat and 1 Koalefant Trunk dropped around it. The Varg and its Hounds will not eat them as long as the Carcass still has meat on it.
The Koalefant Carcass has four stages as it is being eaten: it is fully intact in the first stage; in its second and third stage, its top half will disappear, revealing the Koalefant's spine and ribcage, and in the fourth stage all meat will be gone from it, leaving only some bones behind.
Tips
- To avoid any corpses getting mutated, the player can burn the corpses using a Torch, Lighter or Fire Staff.
- Be quick when dealing with Hound Carcasses, as setting them on fire while their emerging animation is already playing will still spawn a Horror Hound after attempting to burn it.
Trivia
- The Hound Carcass was added in Return of Them.
- The Koalefant and Boss Carcasses were added in From Beyond.
