The Crystal-Crested Buzzard is a hostile mob, exclusive to Don't Starve Together. It spawns during and after Lunar Hail[Verification Needed], or if a Buzzard's corpse is nearby, in which the corpse will stay on the screen until an Incursive Gestalt possesses its body. The carcass will transform into a mutated version after 4 to 5 seconds. After that, it will circle around the player (except for a 6x6 area of the Florid Postern).
Behavior
When a mob dies, the Crystal-Crested Buzzards will land and attempt to get close to the Carcass, then begin to eat the corpse, which will cause mutation. If the player gets too close to them, they will either bite the player or fly and breath cold flames, similar to a Possessed Varg. The fire lasts around 15-18 seconds and can be extended if it hits the existing flames. If without interference, then after 10 seconds, it will fly away and drone near the player again.
Crystal-Crested Buzzards leave when the Lunar Rift closes.
Fighting Strategy
Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill a Crystal-Crested Buzzard when playing with characters with a default damage modifier. The Weather Pain, Brightshade Staff, and Bee Mine are not included due to their random natures. This table does not take into account the damage bonus gained from characters with a lunar or shadow affinity. It also does not take into account the 40% damage bonus Wendy gets from attacking the same mob as Abigail, Wanda's damage bonus with Shadow weapons (except for the Alarming Clock, which does accurately reflect that bonus), or Wolfgang's damage multiplier when he isn't mighty.
It takes 2 blasts with an Ice Staff to freeze Crystal-Crested Buzzard, and it is immune to being put to sleep.
