Drowning is a game mechanic that happens when a player or mob falls into the Ocean.
Causes
- Standing on any Floating Platform when it breaks.
- Standing on a Dock when it breaks.
- Standing on a Vine Bridge when it breaks.
Penalties
The player reappears on the nearest coast, loses 25 Health, Hunger and Sanity, gains 100 Wetness and drops one-fifth of the items from their inventory slots, items equipped in the hand into the water, while keeping their Backpack. Health, Hunger and Sanity will not be reduced below 30.
Some Characters have different penalties:
- WX-78 loses 10% of their Maximum Health and 50 Sanity but no Health and will start taking damage due to their Wetness weakness.
- Woodie loses 50 Hunger in human form. When drowning in Werebeaver or Weremoose form, he will only gain Wetness and the Wereness meter will be set to 0.
- Wigfrid additionally loses all Inspiration.
- Wurt does not lose any stats, does not drop any items, and only gains 50 Wetness.
- Walter loses 12 Health, and 12 Sanity.
When one of the following conditions is met before drowning, the player will not lose Maximum Health, Health, Hunger and Sanity. Inventory items will still drop into the water and the player will gain Wetness.
- An Inflatable Vest is equipped
- The explosion of the Inflatable Vest deals 5 damage
- A Personal Floater is in the inventory or Backpack
Drowned mobs take no damage and gain 100 Wetness.
Shallow Ocean
When drowning in shallow Ocean (coasts, Waterlogged biome), players lose just one-seventh of the items and they will take only 33% of the Health (not max Health), Hunger, Sanity and Wetness penalty.
The player will reappear on the nearest coast without randomization.
Trivia
- Before the Hostile Takeover update, almost all Characters received a Max Health penalty.
