Crabby Hermit
–Wurt
The Crabby Hermit, or Pearl, is a Mob exclusive to Don't Starve Together. She can be found on the Hermit Island.
Players can perform tasks to help the Crabby Hermit in exchange for Shell Bells, Honey, Lures, Adverts, the Pearl's Pearl and exclusive access to the Bottle Exchange Filter.
Behavior
The Crabby Hermit goes out of the Hermit Home during the day. She roams on her island, performing various tasks, mostly fishing. She will approach and comment while the player is performing a task. She is immune to any damage.
In worlds where daytime is turned off, she will roam her island regardless of the time of day.
Friendship Tasks
Beyond level 1, being in proximity to the Crabby Hermit grants access to the Bottle Exchange Filter. More recipes are unlocked at friendship level 3, 6, 8, and 9.
When a task is completed for the first time, the friendship with the Crabby Hermit increases by one level. Most tasks can be redone several times for extra Bundle of Thanks, but they will not grant extra friendship.
When friendship goes to levels 2, 4, 5 and 7, she gives the player a Bundle of Thanks. She also gives a Bundle of Thanks when a task is performed for the second time and for each of the following ones.
The color of the Crabby Hermit's speech is initially light pink. At level 4, the color changes to light magenta. At level 8, the color changes again to light purple, and players will see her as Pearl and her Hermit Home as Pearl's Place. At this point, she will also dance when a player performs the dance emote.
After completing 10 tasks, including all three of the Hermit Home upgrades, she will give the player the Pearl's Pearl.
The tasks players can perform for the Crabby Hermit are:
- Build a Wooden Chair, which can be prototyped using a Sawhorse, whose blueprint can be obtained by building a Replica Relic Chair on the Hermit Island. Wait for the Crabby Hermit to come and see and judge it, after which she will give the player the Sawhorse blueprint to allow them to create better chairs. This task can only be done once.
- Each separate upgrade of the Hermit Home awards a friendship point, result in a total of three friendship points when fully upgraded the Hermit Home. This task can only be done once.
- Planting 10 Flowers on the Hermit Island. This task can only be done once.
- Fertilizing 8 Berry Bushes or Juicy Berry Bushes on the Hermit Island. This task can only be done once.
- Killing a Lureplant on the Hermit Island. It cannot be planted by a player. A Meat Bulb appears on the Hermit Island at the beginning of Spring if this task was never completed. This task can only be done once.
- Removing all Underwater Salvageables around the Island. This task can only be done once.
- Drying 6 Meat or Fish simultaneously on the Drying Racks. This task can be redone if the Crabby Hermit eats 6 foods on Drying Racks.
- Giving a Pretty Parasol, Umbrella or Eyebrella to the Crabby Hermit when it's Raining. This task can be redone after the given clothes ran out of durability.
- Giving a body slot Insulation clothing to the Crabby Hermit when Snow is falling. Examples include the Breezy Vest, Puffy Vest, Dapper Vest, Rain Coat and the Hibearnation Vest (Head slot clothing such as the Winter Hat doesn't count). This task can be redone after the given clothes ran out of durability.
- Giving a Flower Salad to the Crabby Hermit, only once every 10 days.
- Giving 5 heavy Ocean Fishes to the Crabby Hermit, excluding the four seasonal fish. All the fish tasks can be redone without cooldown.
- Giving a heavy Fallounder to the Crabby Hermit; this task gives an extra Advert for Stupefying Lure.
- Giving a heavy Bloomfin Tuna to the Crabby Hermit; this task gives an extra Advert for Rainy Day Lure.
- Giving a heavy Scorching Sunfish to the Crabby Hermit; this task gives an extra Advert for Heavy Weighted Lure.
- Giving a heavy Ice Bream to the Crabby Hermit; this task gives an extra Advert for Snow Day Lure.
An Ocean Fish is heavy if it weighs more than 70% of its maximum weight from its minimum weight. Heavy fishes produce an extra examination quote when weighed with a Pocket Scale. The player can also simply try giving the fish to Pearl, and she will refuse the fish if it's not heavy. A Heavy Weighted Lure will only attract the heavy fishes within a shoal, saving the player time catching and weighing all of the fish. A Tin Fishin' Bin will keep all Ocean fishes fresh until they can be shown to Pearl.
To finish Pearl's quests by early Spring in one trip without sea fishing by completing the three hermit home upgrades, flowers, drying, lureplant, underwater salvageables, rain, berrybushes and chair tasks, one will need to bring the following resources:
- 10 Cookie Cutter Shells
- 17 Boards
- 1 Firefly
- 10 Marbles
- 7 Cut Stone
- 3 Light Bulbs
- 10 Moon Rocks
- 7 Ropes
- 5 Carpeted Flooring
- 1 Empty Bottle
- 10 Butterflies
- 8 Berry Bushes
- 8 Fertilizers
- 6 Meats or Fishes
- 1 rain protection item while it's raining (tip: the player can pick the flowers they planted to craft a Pretty Parasol as soon as it starts to rain)
- 4 Flint
- Learned recipe of the Replica Relic Chair, most easily obtained by killing a Resting Horror
It's possible to complete her questline as early as the first Autumn by swapping out the Lureplant quest for the 5 heavy Ocean Fish quest. However, the player would have to replace the rain task with the seasonal fish task or rely on a rare Autumn rain, or force it to rain by using Telelocator Staffs to increase the world's moisture level. This typically requires two staffs.

Wagstaff Questline
This content is available only after activating the
Lunar Rift
After defeating Crystal Deerclops, Armored Bearger, and Possessed Varg, the Notional Fabricator will appear on the island. When approached, the Grainy Transmission will appear and prompt the player to evict the Crabby Hermit by giving her a Map of Totally Uninhabited Island.
After giving the Map to Crabby Hermit, she will teleport to the Moon Quay with Hermit Home, Hermit Bee Box and Hermit Drying Racks. After that, players will be able to craft Hermit Rehomer next to her as well as other items unlocked by friendship levels.
Decoration
This content is available only after activating the
Lunar Rift
After using a Hermit Rehomer to move Pearl to the mainland, she gains another stat, Decoration. Decorating the area around her home increases this stat and gives access to new structures and items.
Decoration is a number that ranges from 0 to 100. However, there is no practical benefit to increasing Decoration above 90 points, so the 100 point cap has no practical effect on gameplay.
Pearl's Light Posts, Pearl's Tea Shop, Pearl's Hot Spring and Large Drying Racks can only be placed near the Hermit Home. Moving Pearl's home away from these structures renders them non-functional. With the exception of Pearl's Hot Spring, they will not continue to function if Pearl's home is moved back within range of them. After moving Pearl to the mainland, the Combriner shares these restrictions.

Trivia
- The Crabby Hermit and the Bundle of Thanks were introduced in the She Sells Sea Shells update.
- Based on the gifts she gives the player (along with her appearance, and the update that added her), she appears to be based on Mary Anning, a fossil collector, palaeontologist, and dealer who inspired the popular tongue twister "She sells seashells".
- The name "Crabby Hermit" could be a play on Hermit Crab.
- She is the only NPC that can be Shocked. You can use T.I.N.G.L.E. Node to do that.
- Her description for original skin is "You can't beat the classics!"
