The Void Masque (or Herald of Tenebrau) is a Shadow Aligned mob. Like the Slurper, it equips itself as an item in the head slot, but its mechanics are very different from a normal mob. Rather than attack mobs or players, it possesses certain other mobs and possesses dead player characters.

Whenever Ickers would spawn, there is a 20% chance that 6-8 Mobs with Void Masques equipped in their head slots spawn instead. The mobs spawned this way are only ever Spiders, Spider Warriors, Dangling Depth Dwellers, Bunnymen or Rock Lobsters.

When masked mobs spawn this way, 6-12 Void Masques will spawn near the Shadow Rift if a player is nearby. Their only function is to quickly move away from the player and the Rift, and then disappear when they leave the player's screen. The player cannot interact with a Void Masque in any way. This is similar to how Brightshade Gestalts leave the Lunar Rift — no player needs to be next to the Rift for the effects on the world to happen.

When an eligible mob or a Character dies to a possessed mob, a Void Masque appears from above, rebirths the mob or Character and possesses it, taking over its head equipment slot.

Looking at a Void Masque will simply display its name as "Void Masque." However, if the Character has a Shadow Affinity perk unlocked, it will display its real name "Herald of Tenebrau".

The Void Masque exerts the following effects on creatures possessed by it:

  • Planar Entity Protection.
  • It now deals 5 Planar Damage if it didn't already have planar damage.
  • The player cannot give items to them/make any trades.
  • Talking mobs (such as Pigs) no longer speak their normal lines.
  • Mobs do not sleep unless forced to by e.g. Pan Flute.
    • Possessed Characters will never sleep.
  • Mobs do not eat food on the ground.

Masked mobs with herd mentality still defend their unmasked allies. For example, a masked Bunnyman attacks the player if they attack an unmasked Bunnyman.

If the masked mob dies, the Void Masque dies and its loot along with the masked mob's loot is dropped. If a Void Masque is forcibly removed (e.g. by a Slurper), the Void Masque and the masked mob die immediately.

Masked mobs are also hostile to anything that does not have either a Void Masque or one of the Masques (which are dropped by Void Masques) equipped.

If a masked mob kills a Character (except Wanda), an Inthralled Corpse/Deadelgänger spawns in the Character's place. It always has 150 Health regardless of which Character it is. If the Inthralled Corpse dies, the skeleton it leaves behind will not show information on the Character when examined.

The following creatures are possessed by a Void Masque if they are killed by another creature with a Void Masque:

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • The player can get and equip a Void Masque mask using c_give("shadow_thrall_parasitehat"). With this mask, the player can also infect other creatures. This only works in a cave provided that the Shadow Rift is activated.
    • The mask will be invisible in the inventory and unequipping it will cause it to break.
  • "Deadelgänger" is a portmanteau of the words "dead" and "doppelganger".
