Automatic port-forwarding? VPN? Really it's up to the server owner to let other people connect most of the time, not Klei, and it's not hard to set up a server.

True, but how will we communicate? Through Skype? Twitter? Facebook?

There probably will be a way through a limited chat, kinda like the chat in the multiplayer of Civ5.
