While Maxwell will replace your character, you can always go back and rescue said character or start a new world. Adventure mode is only used to unlock wes and Maxwell. It is only fun if you want to challenge yourself, otherwise just make a spare world, go to adventure mode, unlock everything. Delete afterwards.
