i did the test, and apparently, u need 2 feed it with one ANYTING edible (from meatballs, seeds, monster meat to EVEN rot, can u believe it). and the critter will be fed for at last one full day!

(the food item is irelevant, even flower petals are enough, or it were 4 my moth thingy)
