Caves and all their related items are still hard coded into the game (much like long pig). However, the world generator does not make sinkholes, and thus there are no caves. Given that the Dragonfly drops top tier gems, it seems likely to me that cave and ruin content will eventually be included, once the dev team can find a satisfactory way to include it.
