Anyone else think that these are the Ancients?  Maxwells quote for the Ancient Guardian says "My my, the fuel has changed you." implys that exposure to nightmare fuel can change somethings appearance and the Ancients seem to have used nightmare fuel very often. Maybe they had workers that gathered the fuel and something happened that killed them (like a cave-in or something simular) and because their spirits were surrounded by nightmare fuel they became these shadow creatures, attacking other ancients who, once they were killed, became them, too?
