I use them to mark wormholes mainly.  I just place a different number of signs to indicate entries and exits.  For example, the #2 wormhole will have 2 signs at both the entry and exit (4 signs total), while the #4 wormhole will have 4 signs at both the entry and exit (8 signs total).

Too much wood, you say?  Feed some pigs meat (monster will do), and they will help you chop trees.  A small group of pigs will get you a hundred wood in a summer day, and you won't even use up a whole axe!

There's an innapropriate joke about using pigs and having wood somewhere in there, but I leave it to you to fill in the details.
