Are you using a controller? When I played Adventure Mode last week I found that once I put the 4 items into it, I was no longer presented with the option to Travel. Saving and Quitting the game, and then opening the file up again let me go through straight away as long as I didn't open the 4 item inventory. The item remained in thankfully.
Not sure if that problem is localized to the use of a controller or not.
