The stitchpunks from 9 are in fact stuffed dolls made of burlap with metal skeletons. While they are somewhat like WX-78, they don't need to eat, being dolls and all, whereas WX needs a fuel source.
Interestingly, they all have portions of a human soul within them. WX-78 does turn into a ghost in Don't Starve Together, so there's that. The soul portions do give the stitchpunks personality, and I'm not sure WX has a personality.
There is probably more to this.
