It's the kodex winterbottom created it then the crash happend  . Maxwell studying the book , the next thing that happened is williham or maxwell opend  the book and let the shadows out of the book then at the final act he gets captured in his world with charlie . In this world he gets insane    Then he transformed charlie into the Night Monster after that he gave the instruktions to the first charakter Willson .Maxwell captured at the throne of darkness . willson trying to get out of this world . Ist obvius that Maxwell lost the Kodex and its the only way out he knows And with a bigger problem The Night Monster Aka Charlie Creating more shadows trying to get back into the real world and turn the world into a giant shadow But the real Question is how Winterbottom get suck into the world with all of the others and why did he turn into maxwell ? (sry 4 bad english i am german)
