I am more or less in your situation. I am not yet an expert at DS, but the game absolutely refuses to lend me the reins to Adventure Mode or even the wooden thing by fighting me in an unbeatable power struggle it ultimately wins when it sics spiders, hounds, treeguards, and even penguins on my ass. I've been in the portal before, but I never got far before dying. Not to mention that was the first time I'd ever held a Divining Rod, so I was sort of doomed to fail from the start.
