This may be a stretch, but what if she wasn't able to craft anything magic? Since she's a Girl Scout, she'll be used to using survival, science, and other means to life in the wilderness. In Girl Scouts, I'm pretty sure they don't teach you about making magic flutes that put animals to sleep, of magic staves that can freeze or burn.
