Shadow Armor is definitely bad if you're getting hit a lot, and yeah the tentacles drain -40 sanity/min, which is double the drain by a dark sword. These tentacles don't always spawn though so it really depends on how long you're holding the dark sword for vs how many tentacles form and stick around to drain your sanity.

I'll try to incorporate your marble suit strategy within the items section, with an emphasis on tanking damage while dealing tons of it, as well as collecting marble in caves.
