It's the codex wicketbottem created and then the crash happened. Maxwell studying the book, the next thing that happened is william or maxwell opened the book and let the shadows out then at the final act he gets captured in his world with Charlie. In this world, he descends into insanity. He then transformed charlie into the Night Monster after he gave the instructions to Wilson. Maxwell was captured on the nightmare throne. Wilson trying to get out this world. Is it obvious that maxwell lost the codex and its the only way out he knows of and witha bigger problem the night monster AKA charlie creating more shadows trying to get back to the real world and turn the world into a giant shadow. But the real question is how wickerbottom got stuck in the world with all of the others and why did he turn into maxwell
