The demons are probably just that, Creatures of pure evil created to torture others for entertainment and when Maxwell uses the book he is sucked in with "Forbidden Knowledge" just as Wilson was, For the other characters Wolfgang is speculated to be part of the circus where Maxwell found the book at first and maybe Wes too, o(r maybe Maxwell just hates mimes?). WX-78 Is rumored to be an experiment by Maxwell to create "humans" to play with without having to kill any real people, The others, for the moment, are a mystery which is strange, as I think it is apporpriate for the other characters to have backstory too.
