Alchemy Engine（アルケミーエンジン）は、科学の項目で作成可能な建造物です。作るのには金塊×6、板×4、切石×2が必要で、試作にサイエンスマシンが必要です。アルケミーエンジンはより高度なアイテムを試作（prototype）するのに使います。そうすることで初期状態では作れないレシピがアンロックされ、あとはいつでもアルケミーエンジンなしで作れるようになります。また試作品を作ることで正気度が15回復します。
ゲーム中で作成可能なアイテムはその高度さ・複雑さによって4層に分かれています（一覧はクラフトをご覧下さい）。まず始めから作れるのはシンプルな第0層（tier 0）のアイテム。サイエンスマシンは新たに第1層までを作成可能にします。さらにアルケミーエンジンは第2層まで、シャドーマニピュレーターは第3層までを作成可能にしてくれます。
Reign of Giants
Reign of Giants DLCでは作成の材料が変更になり金塊 x6の代わりにElectrical Doodad x2を使用するようになりました。（どちらにしろ金塊は必要になりますが）
トリビア
- 初期のβ版では試作品システムの代わりに、サイエンスマシンにアイテムを入れて「研究ポイント」を貯めるシステムでした。
