Oh, we're going to have some fun!

Wortox

Wortox is a Character exclusive to Don't Starve Together, who was released on March 28, 2019.[1] Like Wormwood and Wurt, he needs to be unlocked, either by purchasing the Wortox Chest or Wortox Deluxe Chest, or by weaving him with 2700 Spools.

Minimap Maxwell's Door.png Origin

A playful imp with a colourful past, Wortox was once a gentle (if rascally) forest creature without a care in the world -- until the day he inherited a terrible curse, and lost a close friend. Unlike the other Survivors, he does not appear to be trapped in the Constant. Perhaps he views this as some sort of game?

–Official description for Possessions[2]

Wortox's backstory is revealed in the animated short Possessions, the details of which are summarized in his biography from the Compendium:

Wortox learned the hard way that one should always be mindful of the company they keep. Once a playful imp without a care in the world, Wortox spent his days helping a Krampus make mischief throughout the Constant. While the pair of rascals revelled in their roguery for a time, Wortox slowly began to see a darkness in the Krampus' heart, and the malice in his pranks. Not wishing for any real harm to come to anyone, the little imp finally put his cloven foot down, but in trying to stop his fiendish friend he unwittingly awakened a terrible power in himself...

In-Game

  • Wortox could be found in the game files for Don't Starve since at least December 2012.[3][4] After the Strange New Powers update, his silhouette could be seen if the player reached the XP cap.[5]
  • The horn of an earlier Wortox was found in Wilson's file from the Hamlet DLC menu beta and SW DLC menu.
  • Wortox's design in Don't Starve was more human-like in appearance.[6] He was redesigned to be goat-like when he was being implemented in Don't Starve Together.
  • Wortox was originally teased as a DLC character in the Don't Starve Together 2019 Roadmap, where a silhouette resembling an earlier design of his was shown in a promotional image for upcoming characters.[7]
  • Wortox's voice is a violin.[8]
  • Gameplay of Wortox was leaked on March 27th, 2019 (one day before his release) by sponsored Twitch streamer RTGameCrowd. [9] Klei would later have to confirm that they did not intend for this streamer to reveal Wortox so early, nor would he be the only streamer to get access to Wortox. [10]
  • Wortox is one of four characters to have more than one ghost transformation, with the others being Woodie, Wormwood, and Wurt. He is also one of three characters to have different ghost designs for each of his skins.
  • Wortox is the second DST-exclusive character, the first being Winona.
  • Wortox is the second DST character to receive a special idle animation after Wormwood.[11] In his idle animation, Wortox smiles and dances.
  • Wortox's Uncorrupted skin is based off of Wortox's past appearance, as seen in his animated short.

Lore

  • Wortox is described by Klei as "a fun, mischievous fellow with a big, kind heart... minus the fact that he eats souls for sustenance."[1]
  • Unlike the other survivors, Wortox isn't trapped in the Constant.[2][12] He arrived through the Ancient Gateway,[13] and has been shown to be capable of leaving at will. His place of origin is unknown.
    • Wortox was also the cause of the crossover with ReLogic's Terraria in the An Eye for An Eye update, via bringing the Terrarium into the Constant in the first place.[14][15]
  • The Pan Flute belongs to Wortox, or at the least he has experience playing the instrument. This was originally eluded to in his quote for the Pan Flute,[16] and later confirmed when this was expanded upon in his Skill Tree.[17]
  • Wortox may know who the Ancient Statues depict.[18]
  • Wortox has a mother[19] and "old friends"[20] in his home realm.
  • Wortox seems to be familiar with Corvus Goodfeather and the Crow Kids from the Midsummer Cawnival.[21]
    • He also refers to the Light Catcher as fairy gold,[22] implying that they're actually Fae.
  • Wortox's quotes reveal parts of his nature as an imp.
    • He is sensitive to the sound of the Lucky Whistle[23] meaning he likely has improved hearing.
    • He might not have blood,[24] or be able to shed tears.[25]
    • He dislikes Garlic and Salt, hissing at the items.[26]
    • He is weak to iron and silver.[27]
    • He finds the concept of books odd, as imps don't share their knowledge nearly as freely.[28]
    • He can't digest food properly,[29] and the act of eating and preparing physical food is unpleasant and foreign.[30]
      • It's possible that he ate physical food before becoming cursed,[31] meaning that these issues likely developed as a result.
    • His curse manifests through his hands,[32] and many of his lines suggest that he cannot touch others without risking the theft of their soul.[33]
  • Wortox's birthday is listed as March 28 in the Compendium. March 28, 2019 was the day Wortox was added to DST.[1][2]
  • To the forum question "there's art with 2 separate characters eating cup noodles, where did the cup noodles come from?" developer Nome replied: "Wortox gave it to the Survivors because he thought it was cups of worms and would be a fun prank. He was very disappointed to find out it is, in fact, food. Nobody knows where he got them from."[34]

Cultural References

  • Imps are mythological creatures. In German folklore they were considered lesser beings known for their prankish nature, but were later Christianized into being attendants of the devil himself.
  • Wortox is also the name of a Swedish Death Metal band. [35]
  • Wortox being voiced by a violin may be a reference to the cultural association of the violin (and music in general) with the devil.[36]
  • His early designs resembled Hellboy.
  • The fact that Wortox's favorite food is Pomegranates may be a reference to the myth of Hades and Persephone, where Persephone is partially confined to the underworld after eating part of a Pomegranate.
  • Wortox's Victorian skin is a reference to the Gargoyle. The description for it is as such: "Traditionally, grotesques were made to ward off mischievous spirits... Wortox never got the memo."
  • Wortox's Minotaur skin is a reference to the Minotaur of Greek mythology.
  • Wortox's Merrymaker skin is a reference to the Yule goat of Scandinavian Yule and Christmas tradition.
