For Don't Starve, its DLCs, and Don't Starve Together, Klei Entertainment regularly releases animated shorts and trailers for promotion and storytelling. These include fully animated cinematic shorts as well as gameplay trailers with cinematic-style sections.
Forbidden Knowledge
Forbidden Knowledge is the first animated short released for Don't Starve and is the origin story of how Wilson became trapped in Maxwell's Dimension.
This trailer was originally found at the end of a puzzle campaign.
Trivia
- When Wilson is holding the radio up in the Forbidden Knowledge cinematic (~00:40), there is a hidden link that leads to a page with the machine that Wilson built. Clicking on the machine's lever will turn the machine on and go to a page with concept art on the Don't Starve website, along with a message from Maxwell. The concept art page is no longer active, but an archived version is found here.
- The various images that fly around Wilson while he is being given "forbidden knowledge" by Maxwell include a Tie Fighter and the Death Star from Star Wars, an illustration of Gamera, various words such as "KLEI", mathematical formulas, molecular structure of caffeine, a Gundam-like mech, and a Vitruvian Man featuring Wilson.
- The ending shot of Wilson being taken by shadow hands was nominated in the 42nd Annie Awards for Outstanding Achievement, Character Animation in a Video Game.[1]
- Upon starting a game in the PlayStation 4 version of Don't Starve, Wilson's origin will play, however the scene where Wilson cuts his hand is skipped to the part where he drips the blood into the beaker. ([4]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCpxyo7-laY)

The End of the Beginning
Don't Starve: The End of the Beginning is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. The animation featured includes a rotating shot of Wilson holding a torch at the start of the trailer and a shot of Maxwell at the end where he reaches out to the viewer as if blocking the camera.
The end of the trailer contains a puzzle in the form of a piece of audio which, when decoded by the community, led to a link for an image teasing the Caves updates.[2]

Underground
Don't Starve: Underground is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. The beginning features a scene following a Rabbit up to and through a hole in the ground. At the end is a scene of Wilson holding a Lantern in the Caves while a Bunnyman sneaks up behind him.

Hungry for your Hunger
Don't Starve: Hungry for your Hunger is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. The beginning of the trailer shows Wilson mining in the Caves when a Slurper approaches him. The Slurper lunges towards the camera from Wilson's point of view. At the end of the trailer, Wilson is seen running in a panic with the Slurper latched onto his head.

Don't Starve: The Stuff of Nightmares is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. At the beginning of the video, Wilson is walking through the Ruins with a torch, when he suddenly trips and falls onto the floor which starts to glow. At the end, Wilson reaches the edge of the Ruins and drops his torch into the Abyss, just as Shadow Creatures start to swarm him.

Don't Starve: A Moderately Friendly Update is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. The end of the trailer features a scene where a repaired Damaged Knight emerges and fights off Shadow Creatures for Wilson. Wilson gives the allied Damaged Knight a thumbs up.

Don't Starve: Six Feet Under is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. At the beginning, Wilson builds a Meat Effigy and runs off smugly. At the end, a Depths Worm appears and lunges towards the viewer. Wilson is then seen resurrected at the Effigy.

Don't Starve: All's Well That Maxwell is the trailer for the Don't Starve update of the same name. After Maxwell is shown waking up in-game at the beginning, a brief scene of him looking up from the Codex Umbra is shown. This is done similarly to how the other survivors' perks were showcased in the Strange New Powers trailer.

- The Voxola worker that Winona saves in the short was named by DST writer Kris during Rhymes with Play #228. Her name is Genevieve but goes by Genny (specifically with a "G").
- A more complete view of the conspiracy board was (perhaps unintentionally) shown during Rhymes With Play #229.
- On the conspiracy board, you can see a lot of details, including for short films that had not yet been released at that time.
- For example, you can see a poster from part 5 of the Willam Carter puzzle, Charlie's image from part 8 of the puzzle, a scene from the short film "The Amazing Maxwell - The Final Act".
- You can also see Charlie's letter for Winona

Possessions is an animated short released for the debut of Wortox in Don't Starve Together on March 28, 2019.
Text
Krampus and Wortox traipsed through the woods,
In the hopes to ruin goodness by being no good.
They both schemed with glee bearing grins of a fiend,
Oh you’re right, they’re quite wrong— they meant to be mean.
With their bounty of loot the haul was never enough,
Oh, what fun, to make glum by stealing one’s stuff.
But cruel-hearted fun still requires a heart,
And that’s where our two scoundrels drifted apart.
You see, mischief and malice is a line drawn quite thin,
And Wortox told Krampus: “This is where this one must end.”
Battling one’s nature is a most vicious affair,
But virtue gives vigor so that one might make a good tear!
And though Wortox felt better to have helped on the whole,
His fiendish half was still cursed to ensnare this foul soul.
So be careful what you wish for, a lesson worth mentioned,
For taking that which is not yours, can lead to possession.

- The moment when Wortox finds out about his curse (When his hand turns red) was later used for the main menu of the game.

- It seems that the basis for the design of Krampus was his old design.

From the Ashes is an animated short featuring Willow. It was released as part of her character refresh for Don't Starve Together on May 7, 2019.
Trivia
- The short was made in 3-4 weeks. [Verification Needed]
- The scene where Willow picks up Bernie and the camera torns in to her face was not made in 3D. To get such a scene, Willow spun in place, and the background (created specifically for such a scene) went from right to left, while at the same time the illusion that the camera rotated 90 degrees.
- At 1:10 you can see Willow's lighter
- The fact that her lighter is present suggests that the short takes place after 1924. Similar lighters were created by Dunhill in 1924. However, the fire set by Willow in the library took place on March 29, 1911.
- The Terrorbeak in the short is the same Terrorbeak that was summoned by Maxwell during the ritual during the fifth puzzle of Willam Carter
- The same Terrorbeak appears next to Willow in the Wickerbottom short.
- The bed next to Willow's is for some rezone the only patterned bed.
- For some reason, there is a sound from the Atrium when Willow is run from Terrorbeak

Lunar Roots
Lunar Roots is an animated short featuring Wormwood. It was released along with Wormwood's debut in Don't Starve Together on June 6, 2019.

- In the short film, you can see the red version of the Blue Parrot from the Hamlet DLC, which is not in the game
- Wormwood's name and its back story of falling from the sky may be a reference to the disaster of the third angel sounding the horn in the Book of Revelation.\
- The short film starts from a forest that apparently does not belong to the world of Hamlet
- The place where the green gem fell looks like a grave. On the grave you can see the symbol of a hoof, as well as a truffle - a very old unrealized item.
- In the background, you can see pieces of the moon that fell from the sky. Which suggests that the green gem is not the first object from the moon to fall into this place.

- Originally, in the moment where Warly feeds his mother, the background should have been orange hearts on a yellow background. However, the animator thought it looked more like fire. Therefore, the scene was removed, and one of the artists drew Warly sitting in a burning building and referring to the orange dog meme
- The scene in which Warly makes soup the crock pot has 3 handles, but it's almost invisible due to the blur
- In the short, Warly cooks Mussel Bouillabaise.
- The moment when Warley's mother smells it should have looked a little different. Initially, the smell poured into her nostrils

- On the wall in Angelina's house, you can see the fish from the DLC Shipwreced. So on the wall hang Pierrot Fish, Tropical Fish and Purple Grouper. Also in the house there are two photos. One shows a Tropical Fish, and the other shows Warly using a fishing rod to catch a Neon Quattro. Which is strange because these fish are not real
- The developers on the stream said that at the moment when Warly touches her mother, she does not understand what touched her, and therefore removed his hand

A 1st For Everything is an animated short featuring Wes piloting a balloon mech to save Wilson from a Bearger attack. It was released as part of a mini April Fool's Day event in Don't Starve Together on April 1, 2020.

- In the shot where Wes punches the Bearger, a piece of paper with a picture of a fish on it is seen taped to the balloon mecha's back. This is a reference to an April Fools Day tradition found in France, called poisson d'avril.

Don't Starve Tales: Inevitable
Don't Starve Tales: Inevitable is an animated short released for Winter's Feast 2020. It is a musical style short in the same vein as the Starver's Carol video from Winter's Feast 2016, featuring fully voice acted singing for the characters. Inevitable was created after Starver's Carol and had been kept "in the vault" by Klei for a long time before it was finally released.[5][6]

Along Came A Spider
Along Came A Spider is an animated short featuring Webber. It was released alongside Webber's character refresh in Don't Starve Together on June 24, 2021.
Plot
The short begins in a sunny countryside house, where we see a human boy catch a butterfly he found stuck in a spider's web. Meanwhile, at the house, the boy's father receives a strange object from who is presumably Wagstaff before driving off in his van. The man takes it into his workshop, and as the boy tries to show him the butterfly he caught the man refuses, having work to do, and locks the door. The boy tried over and over again to get his father to spend some time with him, but he always remained holed up in his workshop, performing science experiments on the strange object. The boy eventually became filled with jealous thoughts, and decided to turn to being naughty to get attention.
One night, the boy sneaks into his parent's room, steals the key to the workshop from his father's bedside table, and walks up to the strange object before pushing it over. It shatters on the floor, scattering broken glass around and crackling with dark energy. As the boy turns to leave, however, the tarp moves aside to reveal what the strange object was - a glass case containing a Spider. The spider lunges at the boy, crackling with energy, and he blacks out.
Upon his regaining of conscious, the boy wakes up, but notices that he is covered in black fur, strangely. Webber then sees his reflection in one of the shards of glass, and to his horror, he and the spider have become one. Webber tries to sneak back into his room, but his parents arrive, woken up by the noise and coming to investigate. Thinking Webber is a monster, they scream and chase Webber out of the house and into the woods. As it begins to rain, Webber takes shelter under a fallen tree and bursts into tears, promising they would never be naughty ever again and wishing there was a way for them to split apart again. The camera then pans up to the cloudy sky, and lightning strikes, forming Maxwell's face for a second.

Waterlogged is a trailer for an update of the same name. The beginning features Wes, Walter and Wilson on a small boat with a sail tired and hot from seafaring in the sun. As Wilson is about to doze off on the boat floor they sail underneath a Knobbly Tree. While picking Figs off of a near tree they are attacked by a horde of sea striders who then board their ship.

An Eye for an Eye
An Eye for an Eye is a trailer for an update of the same name. It begins with Wortox appearing in The Constant with a terrarium while Wilson, Willow and WX-78 are running to escape a Bearger. Wilson makes collision with Wortox while fleeing causing Wortox to drop the terrarium, in reaction to this the terrarium shoots a beacon into the sky spawning the Eye of Terror which consumes the Bearger and attacks the group. Later in the video we can see the four of them fighting the Eye of Terror with many of the crossover items such as the woven Lightsbane belonging and the Eye Mask.

The Incredible Strongman
The Incredible Strongman is an animated short featuring Wolfgang. It was released alongside Wolfgang's character refresh in Don't Starve Together on December 16, 2021. In the trailer, a performance by the Abernethy & Parker Circus is shown, the circus which Wolfgang used to perform for. Different acts are shown performing, culminating in Wolfgang showing off his strength to the crowd by apparently lifting an entire elephant. However, a small mouse spooks Wolfgang and causes him to jump away, revealing that the elephant he had purportedly been holding had actually been held up by a lifting platform which Wolfgang's body was blocking from view. The crowd boos Wolfgang, and he is dismayed.
Later, as the circus travelling in their circus wagon train, Wolfgang is shown honing his strength with weights in his wagon car. The circus wagon suddenly breaks down as they are crossing some railroad tracks, and as the circus members try to get their elephant out of the stuck car, a passenger train suddenly comes barreling down the tracks and crashes into the circus wagon. The video cuts to Wolfgang when he wakes up among the destruction, and he notices a man trapped under one of the train cars. Wolfgang rushes over to try and help the man and as the strongman is straining to lift the burden a pair of Shadowy tendrils shoot out from a book on the ground and cause Wolfgang's muscles to grow extra large with enhanced strength. With this extra power, Wolfgang is able to throw the entire traincar off of the man (who is shown to be William Carter), and the Shadowy tendrils rush out of Wolfgang and back into the book which is now in the rescued man's hands. The man looks distressed at being caught holding the shadow book, as the video ends with him turning and running away.
This trailer depicted the events that had been described in the fourth William Carter puzzle years before, and revealed that Wolfgang had been the one to rescue William Carter after the train crash.

Curse of the Moon Quay is a trailer for an update of the same name. The trailer starts with Wilson, Webber and Wendy out seafaring before their boat gets attacked and partially destroyed by Powder Monkeys. At the end of the trailer Wendy is seen interacting with an Accursed Trinket, she turns her nose up to it and drops it to join Wilson and Webber's side before the item follows her as if getting pulled by something.

Taking Root is a trailer for an update of the same name. It starts with a brief shot of Wagstaff examining a broken portal before the camera pans out to show a rift leading to The Constant appear. In The Constant, Wilson and Wigfrid are seen, While Wilson stays to examine the rift Wigfrid surveys the area before getting attacked by something. At the end of the trailer Charlie walks up to and assumingly repairs the Ancient Gateway.
