Gears are Items dropped by Clockwork Knights, Clockwork Bishops, and Clockwork Rooks. They can also be rarely found by digging up Graves and harvesting Tumbleweeds.

In the Ruins, Gears are plentiful as they can be acquired by hammering Broken Clockworks and by killing Damaged Knights, Damaged Bishops, and Damaged Rooks. Repairing Broken Clockworks with 3 Gears spawns one of the aforementioned damaged chess monsters, but allied instead of hostile.

Upon defeating Ancient Guardian, the Large Ornate Chest has a 77% chance to contain between 3-6 Gears.

Gears in the Ruins are renewable, as killing the Ancient Fuelweaver regenerates the Ruins. All Broken and Damaged Clockworks and the Ancient Guardian respawn as a result.

If a repaired Marble Sculpture of a Rook, Knight or Bishop is mined during a full moon, the respective clockwork spawns which the player can kill for gears. If these sculptures are mined during a new moon, the gears drop immediately from mining the sculpture as the shadow piece is spawned.

The Twins of Terror each drop 3-5 gears (6-10 in total) and can be summoned every 15 days using the Terrarium.

Prior to the WX-78 Character Rework Update, WX-78 could increase their maximum stats by consuming Gears. They can still consume Gears to restore 75 Hunger, 60 Health and 50 Sanity, but maximum stat increases are accomplished with Circuits instead.
