The Lord of the Fruit Flies is an aggressive boss mob that is exclusive to Don't Starve Together and introduced in Return of Them. It appears when there are 15 or more fully grown Farm Plants within a radius of 1.5 tiles, and only when the player is present when the 15th plant grow to 4th stage. Initially, it can only appear after 35 days. Each time a farm plant rots, the timer is advanced by half a day.

The Lord of the Fruit Flies spawns up to 4 Fruit Flies. It has only one melee attack and it will try to kite the player. It does not follow the player further than 7.5 tiles from its spawning point. Nearby Fruit Flies become aggressive towards the player when the Lord of the Fruit Flies is killed.

Upon death, it drops 1 Leafy Meat, 4 random Plant Seeds plus up to 4 extra plant seeds with a 25% chance each. The seeds chance depends on the season. It also drops 1 Friendly Fruit Fly Fruit if there is no other Friendly Fruit Fly Fruit in the world. It can reappear after 20 days; the timer is advanced by half a day each time a farm plant rots. The Lord of the Fruit Flies will not spawn while another exists in the world.

The Fruit Fly is spawned by the Lord of the Fruit Flies. It also has a 5% chance to spawn when a player picks a non-giant rotten Farm Plant. Harvesting a rotten Giant Farm Plant spawns 2 Fruit Flies.

They have a weak melee attack but don't defend themselves if attacked. If the Lord of the Fruit Flies is killed, they are able to become aggressive toward the player. They will also become aggressive if they have planted a weed or have made a Farm Plant upset. They have a 10% chance to drop one Seeds when killed.

The Fruit Fly flies to nearby Farm Soil where they spawn new Weeds. They also attack happy Farm Plants to make them upset (cf. Happiness Stress).

Spear.png Fighting Strategy

Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill a Lord of the Fruit Flies when playing with characters with a default damage modifier. The Weather Pain, Brightshade Staff, and Bee Mine are not included due to their random natures. This table does not take into account the damage bonus gained from characters with a lunar or shadow affinity. It also does not take into account the 40% damage bonus Wendy gets from attacking the same mob as Abigail, Wanda's damage bonus with Shadow weapons (except for the Alarming Clock, which does accurately reflect that bonus), or Wolfgang's damage multiplier when he isn't mighty.

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • The Lord of the Fruit Flies and the Fruit Fly were introduced in the Reap What You Sow update.
  • The spikes on its head resemble a crown, as lords are people with a noble rank.
  • Its name may be a reference to the demon Beelzebub, whose name translated from Hebrew means "Lord of the Flies".
  • Its name may also be a reference to William Golding's famous 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, in which a group of British schoolboys are stranded on an island following a plane crash.
