The Lunar Altars are three types of altars created by inserting the respective pieces into Celestial Fissures. If all three Lunar Altars are built close to each other, within 5 tiles, the Mysterious Energy will appear. After spawning, the Mysterious Energy will release a pulse, completely replacing the current day with a Full Moon and causing moonstorms to appear on the map. During these full moons, Enlightenment will replace Sanity.

While the Mysterious Energy is active, the three Celestial Altars cannot be removed from their Celestial Fissures. Attempting to hammer the Altars will damage the player in a similar fashion to the Nightmare Throne, but will not destroy their tool.

-Scrapbook Description

The three pieces required to assemble the Celestial Altar can be found scattered around the Lunar Mine Biome, trapped in Inviting Formations. They will be dropped when mined, and then must be placed in a Celestial Fissure in the correct order: Base, Orb, Idol. This will create the completed Celestial Altar. They can be carried the same way as Chess Pieces or Suspicious Marble.
