They are also highly flammable, and may be used as fuel in Campfires or Fire Pits. When burned on the ground, a Sapling will leave behind 1 Ash. Because they burn easily, Saplings planted close together are very susceptible to Lightning strikes. This can be prevented by building Lightning Rods. Saplings will not regrow during Winter.
Despite their name and comments from some characters, Saplings will never grow into Trees.
Saplings will turn into Withered Saplings during Summer. During this condition, Saplings are unharvestable for their Twigs and digging these will yield 1 Twig. A way of curing or preventing these from withering is to simply apply fertilizers or build an Ice Flingomatic nearby.
The Return of Them expansion adds a different type of Sapling to the game. Apart from their appearance, they do not differ from the original version. Both types co-exist in a world: The Lunar Sapling only appears in the Lunar Forest Biome on the Lunar Island, while the original one can be found on the mainland. The code for the Lunar Sapling is "sapling_moon".
