In the Caves, Shadow Rifts begin to spawn if the player gives 5 Dreadstone to the Beckoning Hand when it appears after defeating the Ancient Fuelweaver. They are currently the primary source for Pure Horror as well as the only source for Dark Tatters in Don't Starve Together.
Shadow Rifts can only appear in the Rocky Plains Biome, the Bat Cave Biome, the Stalagmite Terrain Biome, the Lichen Biome, and the Mushtree Forest Biomes (excluding the combined Mushtree Forest). The same restriction as Lunar Rifts applies that the Shadow Rift does not spawn within a 5-Tile radius of a Structure, Wall or transplanted Plant.
Once the Shadow Rift spawns, It creates Miasma around it and spawns Fused Shadelings.
The Rift has three stages in total. Every 4-5 days after its initial appearance it advances to the next stage. The transition is accompanied by an explosion that deals 60 damage to all creatures in the area and destroys Structures. The stage determines the distance in which the Miasma will spread, as well as the number of Fused Shadelings that appear:

After 5 in-game days in its third stage, the Shadow Rift disappears. It chooses a new location and reopens 5 days later.
Effects on the World
While a Shadow Rift is active, it has several additional effects on the cave world.
- A player approaching a Nightmare Fissure turns it into a Dreadstone Outcrop, which spawns the Ink Blights.
- Acid Rain replaces regular rainfall.
- Cave-in Boulders accompany other falling objects during Earthquakes.
Activating
To make Shadow Rifts appear in the world (as well as some other content) you need to defeat the Ancient Fuelweaver. After that the Beckoning Hand will appear nearby and you need to give 5 Dreadstones to it.
