Activating
After the player defeats the Ancient Fuelweaver, the Beckoning Hand appears and asks for 5 Dreadstones to be offered. If the player does not offer the 5 Dreadstones, the Beckoning Hand will stay and wait for tribute, so players can offer 5 Dreadstones any time they want. The Beckoning Hand only disappears when the Ancient Key is inserted into the Ancient Gateway.
Once the player assists Charlie, the world will change irreversibly: The Shadow Rift will spawn periodically.

After assisting Charlie, the Shadow Rifts begin to spawn in Caves periodically.
Shadow Rifts can only appear in the Rocky Plains Biome, the Bat Cave Biome, the Stalagmite Terrain Biome, the Lichen Biome, and the Mushtree Forest Biomes (excluding the Mixed Mushtree Forest). Similar to the Lunar Rifts, the Shadow Rift does not spawn within 5-Tile radius of Structures, Walls or transplanted Plants.
Once the Shadow Rift spawns, it creates Miasma around it and spawns Fused Shadelings.
The Rift has three phases in total. Every 4-5 days after its initial appearance it advances to the next phase. The transition is accompanied by an explosion that deals 60 damage to all creatures in the area and destroys Structures. The phase determines the area in which the Miasma will spread, as well as the number of Fused Shadelings that appear:

After 5 in-game days in its third phase, the Shadow Rift disappears. It will respawn after 5 days.
Effects to the World
Every time the Shadow Rift spawns, it has the following effect on the cave world.
- Every time a Shadow Rift spawns, some Ornate Chests will turn into Ornery Chests. When the Ruins are renewed, both chest types reset, converting some Ornate Chests into Ornery Chests.
While the Shadow Rift exists, it has several additional effects on the cave world.
- Acid Rain replaces regular rainfall and affects the strength of certain Mobs.
- Cave-in Boulders drop alongside with other objects during Earthquakes.
- Resting Horror and Lurking Nightmare become more powerful.
- Lurking Nightmare spawn chance increases.
- Mimicreep item will spawn near the conforming Items and imitate them in the Night.
- Ickers will drop and block the path when the players are near their spawning location.
- Void Masques will rebirth and possess certain Mobs, including the Survivors.
Shadow Thralls
Each time the Shadow Rift spawns, a Shadow Thrall is randomly selected to be released into the world, When the player comes near a Nightmare Fissure, it turns into a Dreadstone Outcrop and spawn this kind of Shadow Thralls.
