Woodie

The Frostjaw is a Boss exclusive to Don't Starve Together. It is a large humanoid shark with icy features. It can be spawned from the Ice Fishing Hole on the Ice Sheet, which is in the Rough Ocean. To summon Frostjaw, the player must catch 3 Deep Bass with a Sea Fishing Rod at the Ice Fishing Hole. After that, the Ice Fishing Hole will not disappear and the player can keep fishing. However, only one Frostjaw will spawn.

Brain.png Behavior

By default, the Frostjaw is passive towards the player and simply walks around. Once attacked, it becomes aggressive and starts fighting.

It has 3 attacks rotating in this order:

  1. It performs a melee attack with 2 swipes, followed by a third swipe with its tail which knocks targets back.
  2. It summons 2 walls of Ice Spikes in the direction of the target and dives between the walls, dealing damage and knocking targets back. Depending on the dive's angle, it may destroy only some of the Ice Spikes, leaving the rest as obstacles.
  3. It swims under the ice with its fin visible on the surface, and torpedoes out of it to hit its target, knocking them back and drilling back into the ground. The Frostjaw deals damage and knockback on exit as well as where it lands.

When fighting on a bigger island (in Winter), the Frostjaw's dive attack causes the island to slowly fall apart at the borders, creating Ice Boats that float away and sink after 30 seconds. This diminishes the size of the fighting area, until it reaches the minimum size of a 2-tile radius around the center of the island where the Ice Fishing Hole was.

On defeat, rather than being killed, the Frostjaw gives up and becomes passive again, which can no longer be attacked. The Frostjaw despawns once the area is unloaded, along with Ice Sheet.

After being defeated, the player can trade up to 5 Ocean Fishes with the Frostjaw for one Bootleg Getaway per fish traded. The player can only trade Ocean Fishes wiht 1 Fish Value (e.g., Deep Bass) and Corn Cod. Each heavy Ocean Fish will grant two Bootleg Getaways instead of 1. Also, the first heavy fish trade will give a Sketch for Frostjaw Figure.

Spear.png Fighting Strategy

The Frostjaw's 3-hit combo attack can be avoided by circling around it. Since the attack is directional and can't hit anything at the boss' sides, the attack will get cancelled early and it won't be able to perform its tail attack. Hit it 5 times if it did 1 swipe, or 6 times if it did 2 swipes. After the boss attempts its 3-hit combo attack a few times, it will attempt to trap the player with walls of ice to perform its ice-slide attack, or dive below the ice to perform the dive-bomb attack.

Moving quickly away to the sides can allow the player to avoid being trapped between the walls of ice once they form. If the player doesn't escape from the path of the attack before the ice walls form, a strong pickaxe tool, such as a Pick/Axe or Brightshade Smasher should be used to break the wall to escape (A normal Pickaxe can break the ice spikes as well, but require 2 hits). Once the Frostjaw reaches the end of its slide, it will sit stunned, allowing the player to get many more hits in.

If the Frostjaw performs its dive bomb attack, make as much distance as possible between yourself and where its fin disappeared below the ice, giving a better chance to avoid damage compared to running to the sides. When the Frostjaw lands on the ground after leaping at the player, its head will be stuck in the ground for a short moment before it repeats the attack. If the player deals any kind of damage while the Frostjaw is stuck, it will pull itself out and be stunned for several seconds, giving the player a chance to get many hits in and ending that attack pattern early. The Frostjaw will signal that its stun duration is about to end by standing up and shaking its head. Its attack patterns then repeat.

Good weaponry (Such as a Ham Bat or at least 2 Dark Swords worth of durability) and decent armor (such as Football Helmets and Log Suits) will help with the fight substantially as the fight can be somewhat unfair to the player due to the slippery ice terrain, causing the player to slip and fall, stunning them and allowing the boss to land hits on the player. Speed-boosting items (such as a Walking Cane) are recommended to make avoiding attacks easier. However, the more speed buff the player has, the higher chance they will have to slip and fall while running. Once the player begins to slip, they can stop moving immediately to avoid falling over.

If the fight goes into night time, bringing Lanterns or other forms of light are a wise decision as the Frostjaw can destroy campfires with its attacks. If lanterns are used, they may also be flung away by the Frostjaw's attacks, so taking backups is recommended.

Ice

The Ice Spike or Ice is an object exclusive to Don't Starve Together. It is spawned by the Frostjaw during its dive attack, and remains indefinitely until it melts or gets destroyed. It can be mined with a Pickaxe, dropping 1 Ice with a 75% chance for a second Ice. If it is destroyed by the Frostjaw, it does not drop Ice.

Ice spikes can be mined in one hit when using Pick/Axe or Brightshade Smasher, or while under the effects of Honey Crystals.

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • The Frostjaw was introduced in the Skill Spotlight: Wigfrid & Willow update.
  • In beta after defeat, it dropped 2 Bootleg Getaways with a 50% chance for a third one.
  • The prefab name "sharkboi" may be a reference to the movie "Sharkboy and Lavagirl"
