-Scrapbook Description

The Pan Flute is a naturally spawning and craftable magic item. It requires 5 Cut Reeds, 1 Mandrake, and 1 Rope to craft, and a Prestihatitator to prototype.

When played, it puts all mobs within 3.75 tiles to sleep, except for those that are incapable of sleeping. When PvP is enabled, other players in range will also be put to sleep.

It takes 1 second to begin playing the Pan Flute after clicking it. Mobs will be put into a deeper sleep than usual, allowing the player to move closer to them without waking them up; for example, the Tallbird.

If a mob that was put to sleep is attacked, all of the similar nearby mobs will wake up after a couple of seconds. Mobs sometimes sleep all day after they have been put to sleep by the Pan Flute.

The Pan Flute can be used to get an advantage over enemies, shave Beefalo, or steal Tallbird Eggs and Pengull Eggs, to cool down enraged Dragonfly, and buy time against Toadstool when it is trying to summon Sporecaps. The Pan Flute also complements the Feather Hat when looking for Morsels and Feathers.

Mandrakes are rare and if the player wishes to use Pan Flute more, they can deconstruct a Pan Flute using a Deconstruction Staff and craft it again to renew its durability. Mandrakes also have a chance to be obtained from Klaus's loot.

A single Pan Flute will always be found near Glommer's Statue upon world creation.

During the Winter's Feast event, Gifts obtained by sleeping beneath a fully-decorated Winter's Feast Tree or found around wild Winter's Feast Trees have a very small chance to contain Pan Flutes.

Insight.png Skill Tree (Wortox)

My flute's my muse, I can't refuse!

Wortox

The Pan Flute is also utilized in the Neutral branch of Wortox's Skill Tree. These skills have no effect on The Scales, but aid in unlocking certain Nice and Naughty Skills.

Impromptu Flautist.png Impromptu Flautist

The Impromptu Flautist Skill is available from the start. The Skill gives Wortox a periodic musical pull to play the Pan Flute, which allows him to use it without wasting its durability. The effect goes off cooldown every 8 minutes, which is a full in-game day.

Pleasant Pastorale.png Pleasant Pastorale

The Pleasant Pastorale Skill can be unlocked after obtaining Impromptu Flautist. The Skill summons lost Souls to listen whenever Wortox plays the Pan Flute, summoning 6 Souls each time.

This Skill does not require Impromptu Flautist's effects to be active, and has no cooldown. Using it multiple times in a row in order to gain Souls is unadvised, however, as the Pan Flute is still quite valuable.

Cloudy Carmen.png Cloudy Carmen

The Cloudy Carmen Skill can be unlocked after obtaining Impromptu Flautist. The Skill prevents mobs from becoming hostile towards Wortox for 5 seconds after waking up from the Pan Flute's effects. This effect applies even if Wortox attacks the mobs in question, which can allow for more easily taking down large groups of mobs.

This effect does not protect other players, only the one who used the Skill. Caution should be advised when fighting with other players, as this Skill will cause the mobs in question to direct hostility towards other nearby players instead.

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • Pan Flutes are named after Pan, the Greek god of animals and music.
  • The Pan Flute belongs to Wortox, or at the least he has experience playing the instrument. This was originally eluded to in his quote for the Pan Flute, and later confirmed when this was expanded upon in his Skill Tree.[1]
    • He is also portrayed using it in the portrait for his Verdant skin, which also bears similarities to Satyrs. Satyrs became associated with the god Pan, and were often depicted using the Pan Flute as well.
  • The Pan Flute is one of the 8 ways to put mobs to sleep, with the others methods being the Sleep Dart, NapsackWickerbottom's book Sleepytime Stories, Stuffed Night Cap, reviving from Life Giving Amulet, and eating or cooking a Mandrake.
  • Using a Pan Flute near Birds in flight will cause them to spiral to the ground, ready to be picked up for a short time.
    • When using the Pleasant Pastorale Skill as Wortox, this can cause the Pan Flute to yield extra Souls, either by picking them up and killing them, or as a side effect of having Soul Pierce.
  • Making a Pan Flute out of a Mandrake is a much more efficient use of a Mandrake, as cooking and eating Mandrakes only have two uses, destroy the Mandrake, and also put the user to sleep. Pan Flutes have ten uses, can be renewed with Deconstruction Staffs if used only nine times, and do not put the user to sleep.
